The Earth Clock Less is a reproduction of the original Ball Clock, designed by Takenobu Igarashi for OUN in 1987.
When Igarashi began designing clocks, he realized that he had never seen a clock in a spherical form. Inspired by the shape of the Earth, he transformed the familiar clock into a small globe of time. The ocean, which covers approximately 70% of the Earth, is expressed through the spherical clock body, while the remaining 30%—the land where we live—is represented by the clock face beneath a transparent acrylic dome.
The smooth, uninterrupted surface of the spherical body emphasizes the purity of the form, allowing the simple geometry to take center stage. On the clock face, one end of the second hand appears to chase the other as it continuously travels around the dial, creating a subtle sense of movement across the surface.
The Earth Clock Less is both a functional table clock and a refined design object, expressing Igarashi's distinctive approach to transforming an everyday timepiece into a sculptural form.
