About Nomadic Baskets by Ngurunit Basket Weavers

Ngurunit Basket Weavers is an association of over 200 women in the community of Ngurunit. The area is inhabited by pastoralist peoples who depend on Livestock and their products for their livelihoods. Ngurunit is located in Samburu North sub-county in Northern Kenya in a remote area far from established craft markets and with little public transport and difficult roads. PEAR Innovations has been working with the weavers for over 20 years developing sellable products based on the traditional doum palm baskets originally used for camel milking containers. Over the years the weavers have developed new shapes, sizes and designs for these beaded baskets and mats. Basket selling is one of the few ways that women in the community can earn income for themselves. PEAR Innovations and Ngurunit Basket Weavers work side by side to increase markets and incomes for the weavers.
